In modern society, with the deepening of people's awareness of environmental protection and sustainable development, sewage treatment is one of the crucial tasks.Do you know that key infrastructure such as sewage treatment facilities are largely automated?Let's explore together the use of automation systems in sewage treatment plants, bringing about significant changes in environmental protection.
What is a sewage treatment plant?
Wastewater treatment facilities treat contaminated water to remove harmful components from the wastewater. After treatment, these waters can be safely treated naturally, such as dumped in waterways or used for agricultural purposes.
From a historical perspective, returning wastewater to the environment or nature has been an effective and safe way of treatment. However, after the Industrial Revolution, pollutants became more dangerous than ever before in history. It needs to remove or neutralize these harmful components before natural dumping.
There may be many steps or processes in the treatment facility, depending on the waste and level of danger.Examples of processes include simple settling methods or chemical treatments, such as chlorine.Processing facilities can also use ultraviolet radiation to eliminate harmful mechanisms.
The application of automation in wastewater treatment
The wastewater treatment facility consists of multiple stages, and the output of each process becomes the input of the next process.Like other industries, sewage treatment facilities use automation technology, including many control components and instruments.
Common automation processes include pumping stations, sedimentation chambers, aeration tanks, discharge, anaerobic digestion(biogas systems),and cogeneration systems.Let's delve deeper into these automation systems.
pumping station
The pump station consists of a large storage tank used to store wastewater from various individual sources. After reaching the predetermined liquid level, the pump transports the wastewater to the next stage.
The liquid level switch is installed in the storage tank to monitor the liquid level of the tank. When the liquid level of the storage tank is below the set value, the liquid level switch will send a signal to the main controller. The main controller starts the pump to fill the storage tank.Similarly, when the storage tank reaches the set value, the main controller stops the pump.
A flow sensor is also installed on the pump station to effectively control the flow rate of incoming and outgoing liquids.Flow control measurement is necessary for adjusting the flow relative to the storage capacity of the tank. Please note that the pump is automatically adjustable and can be adjusted according to different flow requirements. It automatically starts/stops running and adjusts its speed according to constantly changing flow requirements.
Sedimentation chamber and aeration tank
The removal of suspended particles from wastewater in the sand settling chamber requires precise flow measurement and particle counting to adjust the wastewater flow rate.
In the aeration tank, dissolved organic compounds are organically decomposed and separated from wastewater.A mass flow meter measures the flow rate of wastewater and suspended particles.
Aeration occurs on the blower, keeping particles suspended, while the mass flow meter continuously monitors the inlet and outlet of wastewater flow and adjusts the blower parameters.
discharge
Wastewater treatment plants usually discharge air containing different biological traces, and these emissions are necessary. They provide insights into processing performance, help control the environment, and help maintain emission data.In addition, this helps to comply with regulatory requirements.
In wastewater treatment facilities, gas detectors monitor emissions. The sensors used for detection. Before passing the emissions through the gas detector, moisture must be removed from the emissions. If it is not possible to remove moisture from emissions,an instrument that is not affected by moisture content must be selected.
Anaerobic digestion/biogas system
Anaerobic digestion is carried out in a sealed container, commonly referred to as a reactor. This reactor utilizes biogas(such as methane and carbon dioxide)to decompose organic waste. The output of this reactor includes solid, liquid, and gas compounds, which can be used for many applications, such as renewable natural gas.
In anaerobic digestion, monitor the gas flow rate of the digester to ensure that the output parameters do not deviate from the standard. This measurement can also control emissions.
